At Ease

Objective

While Charleston is a vibrant, fast-paced, award-winning city with its own popular beaches, Edisto Beach moves more slowly, more attuned to the rhythm of the ocean and the laidback community of neighbors, well established restaurants, and local haunts that make it a sweet escape from city life.

SDCO was charged with updating and outfitting this four-bedroom cottage to create a seaside retreat that celebrates its original architecture and reflects the warmth, simplicity, and eclectic spirit of the idyllic beach town it calls home.

The name, At Ease, is a playful invitation to relax, slow down, kick off your shoes, sip a cocktail, play some music, and let your worries float away on ocean breezes.

The design approach connects the old world and new, creating a layered look that feels as if it’s collected over several generations, just like a beloved family beach house.

Curated elements and details from multiple eras create eclectic juxtapositions that are visually compelling, comforting, and inviting.

Vintage-inspired notepads with the tagline “The Pride of Edisto” are perfect souvenirs — and made for personal correspondence, grocery lists, and keeping track of bridge scores.

The original cedar shingle exterior retains the classic beach bungalow vernacular. In the living room, lacquered cypress walls make an eclectic gallery for a handpicked collection of boat paintings that together, create a space that’s inherently warm, inviting, and nostalgic, like the cabin of a vintage sailboat.

Hand selected antique artwork, including Audubon prints and paint by numbers landscapes, mixes with classic furniture to give each guest room its own unique personality.

Whitewashed bead board in the guest rooms feels fresh, bright, and breezy.

The kitchen preserves classic architectural elements while adding all the modern conveniences for cooking up seafood dinners and Sunday brunches — or mixing up a batch of margaritas.

Vintage-inspired notepads with the tagline “The Pride of Edisto” are perfect souvenirs — and made for personal correspondence, grocery lists, and keeping track of bridge scores.

In a world that’s only getting busier by the minute, At Ease is a seaside retreat made for friends, family, and the art of doing nothing at all.
